  • Smiths Equipment Hire Ltd, winners of the HAE Award 2018, are the Northwest's Largest Independent Equipment Hire Company. Currently in a period of expansion across the business, we now have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Equipment Delivery/HGV Driver for our Preston Depot.

    As a business, we supply all types of customers and organisations with a range of specialist equipment. Our fleet of delivery vehicles are able to supply almost any type of equipment that is requested. From plant machinery for large construction and industrial contracts to domestic power tools for that home refurbishment project. With 12 ‘Hire It Centres’ located across the region we really do have it covered!

    To be successful in this position we seek experienced drivers who have the ability to carry out the following key responsibilities;

    • Carry out daily and weekly vehicle checks ensuring any defects found are reported to the Fleet Manager
    • Keep an accurate record of deliveries and collections using delivery documentation
    • Ensure that any equipment on the vehicle is secured and protected where necessary
    • Collect any money due on the delivery / collection as instructed
    • Maintain product knowledge in order to demonstrate to customers where necessary
    • Demonstrate a high level of customer services and the ability to work in a fast paced, team environment.
    • Essentially, this is a 3.5ton driving role, delivering small tools but you will be expected to cover the HGV driver in times or absence or holiday.

    This is a manual position, so ideally we seek applicants who are physically fit as you will be responsible for managing your own jobs as well as loading goods on and off your vehicle. An understanding of safe loading and towing processes would be highly beneficial.

    It is also essential that you are a qualified driver and that you have the correct industry specific licensing, so you must have all (or some) of the following:

    • Class 2 licence (experienced in driving Class 2 vehicles)
    • Valid CPC card, IPAF Trained, Fork Lift Truck Licence, CSCS Card
    • B and E License (Trailer Towing License) or have passed your test before 1997

    Finally, we want you to be a successful part of our team portraying a professional, smart appearance to all customers, potential customers and other people you meet in the course of your work, taking a pride in yourself and your vehicle.

    This is a full time position offering a competitive hourly rate to match HGV 2 license status. Working hours are: Monday to Friday: 08:00am – 17:00pm with Saturday hours 08:00am to 12:00pm on a rotational basis.
